TREATMENT THERAPIES
Oasis River Recovery uses trauma-informed yoga to target traumatic experiences to decrease symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression, reducing the need to cope with alcohol, over-the-counter prescriptions, or street drugs.
With more and more research indicating trauma's strong connection to the development and worsening of substance abuse disorders, traumatic-informed yoga is a great outlet for individuals suffering from addiction. When the human body experiences stress, it creates cortisol to determine if the situation requires a fight-or-flight response. During a traumatic experience, the body can create and store an excessive amount of cortisol, creating physical and psychological symptoms that can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms or relapses.
Trauma-informed yoga, also called trauma-sensitive yoga, was first used in 2003 by the Justice Resource Institute in Boston, MA, to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and other forms of trauma. The idea was to provide trauma survivors with a natural way to use their own bodies to manage their symptoms in addition to therapy sessions.
Trauma-informed yoga's goal isn't to bring back any hurtful memories. Instead, it helps people recognize their physical sensations so they can work on reducing built-up anxiety, distress, and strain using self-awareness to ground themselves in the present moment.
Trauma can physically and mentally affect survivors, making activities like yoga or meditation difficult. Most yoga instructors and teachers are not qualified to assist with behavioral therapy or psychological problems. Unfortunately, some yoga poses and postures can be distressing for those who have experienced physical trauma, especially sexual abuse or physical assault.
Traditional yoga situations that can bring back painful memories include:

Trauma-informed yoga (TIY) was developed for trauma survivors to meet their particular needs and personal traumatic experiences. This type of yoga creates a safe and stable setting surrounded by people also in trauma recovery or substance abuse treatment. Normal yoga classes usually encourage students to push past their mental distress, while trauma-informed yoga offers a secure environment for people to be aware of any indications of dissociation and pain that may emerge, allowing participants to take a break whenever they feel the need.
Trauma-informed yoga is about more than just getting the postures right. It's about the feeling of living in one's body while doing a pose. Finding a sense of body awareness can help you to link your body and mind in a safe manner. As you experience a comforting and supportive journey guided by a yoga therapist, you'll become aware of sensations and emotions that come up without feeling triggered or overwhelmed, eliminating the need for self-regulation using substances or alcohol.
